Tail composition 1, was the first of many horsetails in my artworks. This first horsetail is very important to me. I was researching the effect of the economical crisis on horse owners, and found out that there was a record number of slaughter horses due to the economical crisis. Many horse traders and privately owned horses had to be slaughtered, because of decline in sales. Most people made the decision to go for the slaughter price because that was the best they could get. The number of people with horses who couldn’t afford the monthly care anymore was growing bigger and bigger.
I was so shocked… I went to a warehouse where they had all the remains of horses with no direct purpose like consumption or hide/leather. It made me sick to my stomach.
I was allowed to take those tails for almost noting, they saw it as waste material. But all I saw where the beautiful horses who didn’t choose for this, who where still full of life. And I wanted them to live on… and not be seen as a percentage of slaughter waste.
